We all love independent bookshops, of course, but I’m feeling particularly warm towards them this week thanks to the brilliantly tongue-in-cheek campaign that’s currently running across the country. Poking sly fun at Amazon’s current woes with parliament – the internet giant stands accused by MPs of avoiding UK taxes – independent booksellers are proudly displaying posters emblazoned with slogans including “Can pay do pay! We pay our taxes”, and “Your money, your bookshop, your community, we pay our taxes”.
And I’m not the only one feeling the indie love. This weekend, Barack Obama took his daughters to One More Page, an independent bookstore in Arlington, Virginia, where they snapped up 15 children’s books .
