My novel and I have parted company – on Monday I posted off the last corrections to the page-proofs, always an anxious moment of letting go, like taking a child to nursery for the first time. There’s the absolute conviction (well-justified) that some flaw will have been missed, and the even deeper certainty that the book/child won’t manage without me while of course the reverse is true – how will I manage without the book?…
